On a recent weekend adventure, we discovered Scarthin Books, the most beautiful English bookstore I’ve ever stepped foot in. With its own veggie (gluten-free, vegan!) cafe, garden, and views across the peaks.
Three floors of books, crammed in every nook and cranny, including the loo. Creaky, uneven floors. Rooms and doorways and little side rooms and back rooms. Bookish gifts. Secondhand and new books. Its own book club, and a history that could be a novel itself. Plus, passionate, gorgeous booksellers, Charlotte and Ashton.
Sam had to essentially blackmail me to leave; I was consoled by my new book bag full of goodies.
Long live indie bookshops like Scarthin, and all who love their invaluable magic.
