Yesterday morning I had my final panel assessment for my creative writing PhD. I passed. Later as I was pottering about, I looked down and caught the faintest rainbow in my palm. “You’re on,” I whispered.
My PhD involves writing a novel and a thesis – for now I am absorbed in the life of fiction. I’ve woken up today facing the free blaze of my writing horizon. I have no doubt that terrorising, evil flying monkeys lurk between here and there, or that the path is fraught with lions and tigers and bears – but I’ve got brains, courage, and heart on my arms, even in the darkest woods. Thank you, friends.
Here we go.
(Cue: someone start singing in a munchkin voice.)
PS Keep an eye out: I hope even the faintest of rainbows finds you today.
I’ve always taken ‘The Wizard of Oz’ very seriously, you know. I believe in the idea of the rainbow. And I’ve spent my entire life trying to get over it.
